Recommended Sales Books
by Rob Scott, Managing Director
My first Sales Manager, a legend called Mark Bailey, gave me a copy of ‘The Psychology of Achievement’ by Brian Tracy in 1991 on audio cassette!
Since then, I've probably read or listened to a book a month on sales and marketing and I'm a bit of a 'nerd' when it comes to sales. Many friends and business contacts know this, so I often get asked - "what books would you recommend for this level of sales professional?". So, here goes!
For 'new to sales' or junior sales roles
- Brilliant Selling, Jeremy Cassell and Tom Bird (good introduction to sales terminology and no-nonsense stuff)
- Exactly What to Say, Phil M. Jones (easy to read and simple)
- The Greatest Sales Stories Ever Told: From The World’s Best Salespeople, Robert L Shook.
- Anything by Larry Winget, but make sure that you know the person, as he’s full-on!
For one-year plus sales professionals
- The Challenger Sale: Taking Control of the Customer Conversation, Matthew Dixon and Brett Adamson (one of the most current and highly-rated sales training programmes)
- Digital Selling: How to Use Social Media and the Web to Generate Leads and Sell More, Grant Leboff
- eselling: The Alternative Way to Prospect and Sell for Sales Professionals: How to Use the Internet for Prospecting, Personal Branding, Sean McPheat (great insight for using social media)
- Outbound Sales, No Fluff, Rex Biberston & Ryan Reisert (good for SaaS and IT Sales)
- Customer Centred Selling by Robert L Jolles.
- Little Red Book Of Selling: 12.5 Principles of Sales Greatness, Jeffrey Gitomer.
- Same Side Selling: A Radical Approach to Break Through Sales Barriers, Jack Quarles and Ian Altan
- Sales Blazers, Mark Cook.
- Smart Calling, Art Sobczak (Telesales)
- Selling to Win, Richard Denny (straightforward and British in style, the opposite of Zig Ziglar et. al.)
- The First 90 Days, Michael Watkins
For Experienced Sales – Non Managers
- The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey (one of the most influential business books ever)
- Selling to Big Companies, Jill Konrath
- Influence The Psychology Of Persuasion, Robert B Cialdini.
- How To Master The Art of Selling Anything, Tom Hopkins.
- ‘The Psychology of Selling’ - Brian Tracy (almost forty years old, but the backbone to most of the books in this list)
- To Sell is Human – Daniel Pink
- SPIN Selling, Neil Rackham (academic but a classic)
- Real Magic, Dr. Wayne Dyer (a life changer for the right kind of personality that is open to development)
New Sales Managers
- The Accidental Sales Manager: How to Take Control and Lead Your Sales Team to Record Profits, Chris Lytle
- The Sales Acceleration Formula, Mark Roberge
- 5 Unbreakable Laws of Selling, Jeffrey Gitomer
For Sales Managers/Sales Directors
- Drive, Daniel Pink
- Coaching Sales People into Sales Champions, Keith Rosen
- How to Win Friends and Influence People, Dale Carnegie
- Cracking the Sales Management Code: The Secrets to Measuring and Managing Sales Performance, Jason Jordan and Michelle Vazzana
- Emotional Intelligence 2.0, Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves
- The 10X Rule, Grant Cardone
- Sales Management. Simplified.: The Straight Truth About Getting Exceptional Results from Your Sales Team, Mike Weinberg
- Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action, Simon Sinek
Brian Tracey says 'study at the University of the Car' as a typical 'old school' field sales rep would spend the same amount of time per year in their car as a University Student would spend studying. I think a worthwhile piece of advice for all Sales Managers is to recommend listening to audiobooks and podcasts while travelling to client meetings. Whilst mentioning cars - check out our guide into company car or car allowance?
